The Lottery - An American Tradition

Of course, lotteries are not at all exclusively American in nature. But early American history is full of stories of how pervasive lotteries were, from colonial times forward. In fact, the Jamestown Colony (now Virginia) was founded with financial support that was raised by a lottery in England.

Yale and Harvard were both originally supported by funds made available from US government run lotteries. The American Revolution was financially supported via lottery money. People have always loved lotteries. (The word "lottery" by the way is derived from the phrase "casting lots", which is a phrased dating back to biblical times.)

From 1890 to 1964, lotteries in the USA were banned because of corruption in the lottery system and mishandling of funds. 1964 was the year that New Hampshire authorized a lottery to fund local education, and this began a new wave of lotteries in the United States. By 1975, twelve other states, including New York and New Jersey, had launched their own state-run lotteries.

Currently over half of the 50 states have state-run lotteries, and some of the smaller states have formed joint ventures with other small states to run Powerball lotteries. Besides the USA, there are over 50 countries in the world who have lotteries. Many of these lotteries are run on a national level, including Great Britain and Canada's lotteries.

The lottery is at least a $70 billion a year industry.

Lottery - A Definition

A lottery is a gambling game involving a large pool of numbers. A relatively small series of those numbers are selected at random (a lot). The players who have selected the numbers matching the numbers in that randomly selected series are winners.

Lottery in the UK

One type of lottery is an instant scratch card, and since their introduction in the UK in 1994, they've sold over £43 million per year just in instant scratch cards. This makes these lottery tickets the single biggest-selling impulse-buy in the entire country of the UK.

Routines

Big lottery jackpots are typically weekly drawings. They're often called lotto, or super lotto, powerball, etc. This is the big game that produces the millionaires that you see on television. Some states (like Texas, for example) have two drawings like this each week. Since these lotto tickets only cost a dollar and typically only take a second or two to purchase, buying them has become a part of many people's routine, like buying groceries or gas.
