About Roulette

The game of roulette is often considered one of the more glamorous casino games. When people think of a spinning roulette wheel, they generally picture elegantly dressed James Bond types drinking martinis and pretending that they don't care whether or not the gods of good luck smile on them or not. The fact that a roulette wheel is a mechanical device, practically untouched by human hands (at least compared to cards and dice) only adds to the mystique of roulette.

The Challenge of Roulette

If you've read anything at all about gambling theory or gambling systems, then you've read that the house edge at roulette is an immutable, unchangeable 5.26%, which is a sizable edge. In the long run, it is unavoidable and inevitable that the player will lose. Beating impossible odds is attractive to gamblers, and so roulette remains one of the most popular casino games.

Betting Systems

Most systems for beating roulette involved doubling the size of your bets after losing (the Martingale system). This system would work perfectly if you had an infinite bankroll, and there were no limits to the size of your bets. Sadly for Martingale players, no one has an unlimited bankroll (although Warren Buffett or Bill Gates might come close, but they don't play roulette). To add to the Martingale players' misery, all roulette tables have a max bet.

So the inevitable outcome of a Martingale betting progression is an eventual streak of bad luck from which the gambler never recovers. There are many variations of the Martingale system which make the betting strategies more complicated, but none of the variations do anything to change the immutable house edge.
